ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Nguyen Phuoc Vinh Co is a retired teacher. After he retired from teaching in 2018, he devoted himself particularly to the study of the language of medicine in which he was previously interested. For 20 years previous to that, he taught English for ESP at Da Nang University (1995-2015). He runs a ‘specialized English’ website to help students learn English for ESP. II. DEFINITIONS OF MEDICAL SPECIALTIES

1. Gyn(a)eco.logy /ˌɡaɪnəˈkɒlədʒi/: The branch of medicine dealing with health care for women, especially the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the female reproductive system.

2. Obste.trics /əbˈstɛtrɪks/:  The branch of medicine that deals with the care of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the recuperative period following delivery.

3. Obste.trics-gyneco.logy (OB-GYN): The combined practice of obstetrics and gynecology.

Ob-gyn/oʊ bi dʒi waɪˈɛn; sometimes ˌɒb ˈɡaɪn/: The branches of medicine that deal with the birth of children (= obstetrics) and the diseases of women (= gynaecology)

4. Neo.nato.logy /ˌniːəʊnəˈtɒlədʒɪ/:  The branch of medicine concerned with the care, development, and diseases of newborn infants.
