1. Hãy chỉ ra rằng bạn đang nâng cốc chúc mừng. Hãy nhận diện ai và điều gì bạn đang (nâng cốc) chúc mừng:

Admire /ədˈmaɪər/: to respect and approve of someone or their behaviour. Khâm phục

Be cut out for | be cut out to be something: (informal) to have the qualities and abilities needed for something. Phù hợp với

o He’s not cut out for teaching.

Learn from  (someone or something): to acquire knowledge, wisdom, or experience from someone or something. Học được từ

o I learned from the greatest still-life painter in the world.

o I’m trying to learn from my past mistakes.

Recognize /ˈrekəɡnaɪz/: to recognize is also to show public appreciation for the achievements of someone, or a person or group. Công nhận, ghi nhận

o With this medal, we would like to recognize Lynn Jennings for excellence in women’s running.

Select  /sɪˈlekt/,  /səˈlekt/: to choose a small number of things, or to choose by making careful decisions. Tuyển chọn

o There was a choice of four prizes, and the winner could select one of them.

o How do you select people for promotion?

o Who has been selected to take part in the project?

Value  /ˈvælju/: to consider something as important and worth having. Coi trọng

o I value his friendship more than I can ever say.

Appreciate /əˈpriːʃieɪt/: to understand how good or useful someone or something is. Đánh giá cao

o Her abilities are not fully appreciated by her employer.

o I’m not an expert, but I appreciate fine works of art.

Believe in /bɪˈliːv/: to be confident that something is effective and right. Tin ai/cái gì

o They don’t believe in living together before marriage.

Make most of: to take full advantage of something because it may not last long. Tận dụng cái gì do chúng có thể không lâu dài

o It’s a beautiful day – we should make the most of it.

o I wanted to make the most of the time that we had together.

o I work long hours so when I get some free time, I want to make the most of it.

o Your youth won’t last forever – make the most of it!

Represent /ˌreprɪˈzent/: to speak, act, or be present officially for another person or people. Đại diện (cho)

o They chose a famous barrister to represent them in court.

o Union officials representing the teachers met the government today.

o I sent my husband to represent me at the funeral.

Take advantage of: to use the good things in a situation. Tận dụng điều gì (một cơ hội …)

o I thought I’d take advantage of the sports facilities while I’m here.

o I took advantage of my boss’s absence to catch up with some correspondence.

o We are taking advantage of the strong euro and are going to visit the US.

o I’d encourage all staff to take advantage of the training opportunities we offer.

Be committed to

Committed adj  /kəˈmɪtid/: loyal and willing to give your time and energy to something that you believe in. Tận tụy

a committed socialist/Christian/teacher

The whole family are committed vegetarians.

o We are committed to withdrawing our troops by the end of the year.

o We are committed to the ideal of equality.

Benefit from /ˈbenɪfɪt/: to be in a better position because of something. Có lợi, được lợi

o Who exactly stands to benefit from these changes?

Respect /rɪˈspekt/: to have a very good opinion of somebody/something; to admire somebody/something Tôn trọng

o I respect Jack’s opinion on most subjects.

Stand for /stænd/: to support or represent a particular idea or set of ideas. Ủng hộ, đại diện  

o This party stands for low taxes and individual freedom.

Utilize  /ˈjut̬əlɑɪz/:  to make use of something. Tận dụng, dùng

o The library’s great collection allowed me to utilize many rare sources.

Encouragement /ɪnˈkʌrɪdʒmənt/: the act of encouraging somebody to do something; something that encourages somebody. Sự khuyến khích, sự khích lệ  

o He needs all the support and encouragement he can get.

o With a little encouragement from his parents he should do well.

o She was given every encouragement to try something new.

o Her words were a great encouragement to them.

Leadership /ˈliːdəʃɪp/: the set of characteristics that make a good leader. Sự lãnh đạo

o What the company lacks is leadership.

o He lacks leadership qualities/skills.

Perspective /pəˈspektɪv/: a particular way of considering something. Quan điểm, góc nhìn

o Her attitude lends a fresh perspective to the subject.

o He writes from a Marxist perspective.

o Because of its geographical position, Germany’s perspective on the situation in Russia is very different from Washington’s.

Sense of humour /sɛns əv ˈhjuːmə/: someone who has a sense of humour often finds things amusing, rather than being serious all the time. Óc hài hước

o You need a sense of humour in this job.

o He had enormous charm and a great sense of humour.

o Only someone with a very warped sense of humour could find this amusing.

o He’s got no sense of humour.

o She has a great sense of humour.

Wisdom /wɪzdəm/: Wisdom is the ability to use your experience and knowledge in order to make sensible decisions or judgments. Sự thông thái, khôn ngoan

o …the patience and wisdom that comes from old age.

o …a great man, who spoke words of great wisdom.

Endeavor  /ɪnˈdevər/: an effort or attempt to do something. (Một) cố gắng, nỗ lực

o Writing is a very different endeavor than teaching.

Openness /ˈəʊpənnəs/: honesty. Sự thẳng thắng, chân thật

o If these discussions are to succeed, we’ll need openness from/on both sides.

Perseverance /ˌpɜːsɪˈvɪərəns/: continued effort to do or achieve something, even when this is difficult or takes a long time. Tính kiên trì, sự bền gan

o It took a lot of patience and perseverance for all sides to reach an agreement.

o Over and over, they have shown perseverance in the face of adversity.

o A combination of brilliant imagination and dogged perseverance enabled them to triumph.

Sensitivity /ˌsensɪˈtɪvəti/: an ability to understand what other people need, and be helpful and kind to them. Sự nhạy cảm

o The police showed commendable sensitivity in their handling of the case.

Hard work: work that needs a lot of physical or mental effort. Công việc cần mẫn/chăm chỉ. 

o It was hard work on the farm but satisfying.

o Her colleagues admired her capacity for hard work.

o The boss thanked us all for our hard work on the project.

Initiative /ɪˈnɪʃətɪv/: the ability to use your judgment to make decisions and do things without needing to be told what to do. Óc sáng kiến

o Although she was quite young, she showed a lot of initiative and was promoted to manager after a year.

o I shouldn’t always have to tell you what to do, use your initiative (= use your own judgment to decide what to do)!

Optimism /ˈɒptɪmɪzəm/: the quality of being full of hope and emphasizing the good parts of a situation, or a belief that something good will happen. Sự lạc quan

o There was a note of optimism in his voice as he spoke about the company’s future.

Support  /səˈpɔːt/: agreement with and encouragement for an idea, group, or person. Sự ủng hộ

o Environmental groups are fast gaining support among young people.

o We’ve succeeded in drumming up a lot of local support for our attempt to stop the superstore being built.

Động từ (Verbs)

Carry (something) on /ˈkæri/: to continue doing something, or to cause something to continue. Tiếp tục

o Let’s carry on this discussion at some other time.

o Carry on the good work!

Crop up (in something): to happen or be found in a situation or place, often unexpectedly. Xuất hiện, xảy ra thường bất ngờ

o Her name keeps cropping up in conversation.

o Problems can crop up in all breeds of dog.  

Fall behind:  /fɔːl/ US  /fɑːl/: to fail to do something fast enough or on time. Bị tụt lại đàng sau

o He was ill for six weeks and fell behind with his schoolwork.

Pitch in (with somebody/something): (informal) to join in and help with an activity, by doing some of the work or by giving money, advice, etc. Làm việc hăng say

o Everyone pitched in with the work.

Tune in (be tuned in (to sb / stg) /tjuːn/,  /tuːn/: to have a good understanding of what is happening in a situation or what other people are thinking. Hiểu rõ, nắm bắt được

o She just doesn’t seem to be tuned in to her students’ needs.

o She’s tuned in to all the latest fashions.

o Our staff are trained to be tuned in to the needs of children.

Come up with  /kʌm/: to suggest or think of an idea or plan. Nảy ra

o She’s come up with some amazing scheme to double her income.

Do away with something /də/ /du/ /duː/: to get rid of something or stop using something. Loại bỏ, gạt bỏ, hủy bỏ 

o These ridiculous rules and regulations should have been done away with years ago.

o Computerization has enabled us to do away with a lot of paperwork.

o How could they do away with a beautiful old building like that and put a car park there instead?

Get behind (with something): 1. to fail to make enough progress or to produce something at the right time. Chậm trể

o I’m getting behind with my work.

o He got behind with the payments for his car.

Get behind somebody/something: (informal) 2. to help or support somebody/something. Ủng hộ ai, cái gì

o Prince William has appealed to the public to get behind the project.

o The team manager called on supporters to get behind him and the team.

Recall /rɪˈkɔːl/: to remember something. Nhớ lại

o She could not recall his name.

o Many years later Muir recalled his days at Glasgow University.

o I cannot recall a time when the country faced such serious problems.

Used to + verb: shows that a particular thing always happened or was true in the past, especially if it no longer happens or is no longer true. Đã thường làm gì (nay không còn làm nữa)

o She used to live in Glasgow.

o She used to love dancing, but she doesn’t do it any more.

o You don’t come and see me like you used to.

Cope with: to deal successfully with a difficult situation or a person in a difficult situation. Đối phó với

o Ever since her illness, she just can’t cope with the stress of work.

o Her religious beliefs helped her to cope with the loss of her husband.

o They were left to cope with the aftermath of the earthquake.

Fall apart: to have so many problems that it is no longer possible to exist or function. Tan vỡ  

o Their marriage finally fell apart.

o The deal fell apart when we failed to agree on a price.

Keep track of  somebody/something: to have information about what is happening or where somebody/something is. Được thông tin về cái gì

o Bank statements help you keep track of where your money is going.

Take charge of : to accept responsibility for something and have control over it. Chịu trách nhiệm

o She took charge of the project and made sure it was finished on time.

Would + verb Habitual actions in the past: We use would to refer to typical habitual actions and events in the past. This is usually a formal use and it often occurs in stories (narratives). Đã thường làm gì

o I had a friend from Albany, which is about 36 miles away, and we would meet every Thursday morning and she would help us.

MAY: Cầu mong, chúc

‘May’ often comes at the beginning of the sentence, used in formal expressions of wishes and hopes (thường đứng ở đầu câu, dùng để diễn đạt mong ước và hy vọng). Cầu mong, chúc

– May the New Year bring you all your heart desires.

*CONGRATULATE  /kənˈɡrætʃəleɪt/ (verb)

CONGRATULATE   sb ON sth = Chúc mừng về điều gì

CONGRATS /kənˈɡræts/ (noun)

[số nhiều] (informal)

1. (cũng dùng congratulations) a message congratulating somebody ( = saying that you are happy about their good luck or success)
