ĐỊNH NGHĨA CỦA ĐỘNG TỪ ‘AWARD’ TRONG TỪ ĐIỂN OXFORD (2005)

Từ điển ‘Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary of Current English (2005) khi định nghĩa động từ ‘award’ là ‘to make an official decision to give sth to sb as a payment, prize, etc’ mà không có cụm từ ‘AS A PUNISHMENT’ như từ điển Oxford (1992). Nếu thế thì theo định nghĩa này ta phải hiểu ‘ra một quyết định chính thức tặng/thưởng cho ai cái gì’ và ví dụ ở từ điển này (dùng ở dạng bị động). Tôi cho rằng ban biên soạn chuyên từ điển New Era đã tham khảo ấn phẩm Oxford (2005) vì họ lấy nguyên ví dụ tiếng Anh ở từ điển này ‘He was awarded damages of £50000’

Ban Biên Soạn Chuyên Từ Điển NEW ERA dịch câu – *He was AWARDED damages of £50000 thành ‘*(Anh ta) được ‘THƯỞNG’ tiền đền bù* là 50000 pao’.

Trong ví dụ này, từ điển NEW ERA đã dịch đúng động từ ‘award’ và danh từ ‘damages’.

OXFORD BUSINESS ENGLISH DICTIONARY (2008)

AWARD (v): to make an official decision to give sth to sb as a payment:

o The jury awarded $30 million in damages against the newpaper.

LONGMAN BUSINESS ENGLISH DICTIONARY (2007)

AWARD (v): to officially decide that someone should have something such as an amount of money:

o The tribunal can award you compensation or order your reinstatement.

OXFORD LEARNER’S DICTIONARY OF ACADEMIC ENGLISH (2018)

AWARD (v): to make an official decision to give a payment, prize or contract to sb:

o The court awarded her a sum of £4.4 million.

LONGMAN LEXICON OF CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH (1985).

AWARD (v): to give by a decision in a court of law:

o The judge awarded a large sum of money to those hurt in the explosion.
