TÍNH KẾT HỢP LÀ GÌ? (WHAT IS COLLOCATION?)

COLLOCATION /ˌkɒləˈkeɪʃn/, /ˌkɑːləˈkeɪʃn/

Theo từ điển Longman về Giảng dạy Ngôn ngữ & Ngôn ngữ học Ứng dụng [tr.62], thì ‘Tính kết hợp là cách thức từ ngữ được dùng thường xuyên với nhau. Tính kết hợp nói đến các hạn chế/giới hạn về các từ ngữ có thể dùng với nhau, ví dụ các giới từ nào được dùng với các động từ nào, hoặc động từ nào và danh từ nào được dùng với nhau’ (the way in which words are used together regularly. Collocation refers to the restrictions on how words can be used together, for exampe which preposition are used with particular verbs, or which verbs and nouns used together).

Ví dụ, ở tiếng Anh động từ ‘perform’ (thực hiện) được dùng với danh từ ‘operation’ (ca phẫu thuật) chứ không phải ‘discussion’ (sự thảo luận).

– The doctor performed the operation (đúng)

– The committee performed a discussion (sai)

Thay vì ‘performed a discussion’, ta nói:

– The committee held/had a discussion.

Động từ ‘perform’ được dùng với (kết hợp với) ‘operation’ và ‘hold’ và ‘have’ kết hợp với ‘discussion’.

Tính từ ‘high’ kết hợp với danh từ ‘probability’ (điều có khả năng xảy ra) chứ không với danh từ ‘chance’ (cơ hội).

– a high probability  nhưng a good chance

Động từ ‘do’ kết hợp với ‘damage’ (sự hư hại), ‘duty’ ( nghĩa vụ), ‘wrong’ (điều sai trái) chứ không kết hợp với ‘trouble’ (điều phiền toái), ‘noise’ (sự ồn ào), ‘excuse’ (lời biện hộ).

– do a lot of damage   do one’s duty   do wrong

– make trouble   make a lot of noise   make an excuse

1. CRIME (ILLEGAL ACT): TỘI

o ADJ + CRIME

appalling (làm kinh hãi), awful (khủng khiếp), barbaric (dã man), bloody (tàn bạo, khát máu), brutal (hung ác, tàn bạo), despicable (đáng khinh, hèn hạ.), dreadful (dễ sợ, kinh khiếp), grave (trầm trọng, nghiêm trọng), heinous (ghê tởm), horrible ( kinh tởm, xấu xa), horrific (ghê sợ, kinh hoàng), serious (nghiêm trọng), terrible (dễ sợ), vicious (xấu, ác.)

indictable (có thể bị truy tố, có thể bị buộc tội), alleged (bị buộc tội)

– She never faced trial for her many alleged crimes.

unsolved (chưa có lời giải), copycat (bắt chước)

motiveless (không có động cơ)

victimless ((tội) không có nạn nhân)

carry out (thực hiện) commit (phạm), report (báo cáo), solve (a crime) ( = find out who did it: tìm ra hung thủ)
