NGÔN NGỮ Y HỌC TIẾNG ANH: NGHĨA ĐEN & NGHĨA BÓNG

Xin giới thiệu với Diễn Đàn một số thuật ngữ y học vừa mang nghĩa đen: ‘nghĩa đầu tiên hiểu một cách thông thường’ vừa mang nghĩa bóng: ‘nghĩa bóng bảy suy ra từ nghĩa đen’.

1. ANTIDOTE TO /ˈæntidəut /: Thuốc giải độc (nghĩa đen) và liều thuốc giải (nghĩa bóng)

Nghĩa đen của ‘antidote to’ là ‘a medicine that will stop the effects of a poison or a dangerous drug’. Xin xem ví dụ:

– There is no known antidote to the poison.

Nghĩa bóng của ‘antidote to’ là ‘anything that takes away the effects of sth unpleasant’. Xin  xem ví dụ:

– The holiday was a marvellous antidote to the pressure of office work.

– A Mediterranean cruise was the perfect antidote to a long cold winter.

2. CURE /kjʊə(r)//REMEDY /ˈremədi/ (FOR): Chữa bệnh (nghĩa đen) và giải pháp (nghĩa bóng)

Nghĩa đen của ‘cure/remedy (for)’ là ‘sth such as a medicine or form of treatment that cures s.e who is ill’. Xin xem ví dụ:

– What is the best cure for a hangover ?

– As yet there’s no known cure for this disease.

– Salt water is a good home remedy for a sore throat.

Nghĩa bóng của ‘cure/remedy (for) là ‘sth that solve a problem, improve a bad situation, etc.’. Xin xem các ví dụ:

– Do you think there is any cure for the nation’s economic troubles?

– If you find it hard to live on your present salary, the best remedy would be to change jobs.

3. PANACEA (FOR) /ˌpænəˈsiːə/: Thuốc chữa bách bệnh (nghĩa đen) và một giải pháp cho mọi vấn đề (nghĩa bóng).

 Nghĩa đen của ‘panacea for’ something that will cure all illnesses. Ví dụ

– This specific course of treatment may be effective in this case, but there is no panacea for cancer.

Nghĩa bóng của ‘panacea for’ là something that will solve all problems. Xin xem các ví dụ:

– Technology is not a panacea for all our problems.

– Some economists say that consumer spending is the panacea for all economic ills.

– Librarians welcomed computerization as a panacea for all their cataloguing problems.

Thuật ngữ ‘panacea’ mà người xưa hy vọng chữa bách bệnh thì này chỉ mang nghĩa bóng ‘panacea’ có nghĩa ‘một giải pháp cho mọi vấn đề’ nhưng ta vẫn có thể dùng nghĩa đen của nó ở tiếng Việt như ví dụ sau:

– Không nên xem hệ thống kiểm toán mới là phương thuốc chữa bách bệnh cho nền kinh tế tòan cầu.

4. PARALYSIS /pəˈræləsɪs/: Chứng liệt (nghĩa đen) và sự tê liệt (nghĩa bóng)

Nghĩa đen của ‘paralysis’ là ‘a loss of control of, and sometimes feeling in, part or most of the body, caused by disease or an injury to the nerves’. Xin xem ví dụ

– The paralysis affects his right leg and he can only walk with difficulty.

Nghĩa bóng của ‘paralysis’ là ‘a total inability to move, act, function, etc.’ Xin xem ví dụ

– The strike caused total paralysis in the city.

5. PALPITATION /pælpɪteɪʃən/: Đánh trống ngực (nghĩa đen) và hồi hộp (nghĩa bóng)

 Nghĩa đen của  ‘palpitation’ là ‘When someone has palpitations, their heart beats very fast in an irregular way’. Xin xem ví dụ.

– Caffeine can cause palpitations and headaches.

Nghĩa bóng của ‘palpitation’ là ‘make sb nervous’. Xin xem ví dụ.

– Just the thought of flying gives me palpitations (= make me nervous).

6. TONIC /ˈtonik/: Thuốc bổ (nghĩa đen) và liều thuốc bổ (nghĩa bóng)

Nghĩa đen của ‘tonic’ là  ‘medicine that gives strength or energy’. Xin xem ví dụ.

– The doctor prescribed a (bottle of) tonic.

Nghĩa bóng của ‘tonic’ là ‘anything that makes people feel healthier and happier’. Xin xem ví dụ.

– The weekend break was just the tonic I needed.
