BÉ CÁI LẦM TRONG SÁCH ‘A TEXTBOOK OF TRANSLATION’: LỖI CỦA PETER NEWMARK HAY LỖI ĐÁNH MÁY?

Là tác giả của một loạt công trình dịch thuật như ‘A Textbook of Translation’ (1988), ‘Paragraphs on Translation’ (1989), ‘About Translation’ (1991), ‘More Paragraphs on Translation’ (1998), Peter Newmark được xem là một trong những nhà tiên phong trong giới dịch thuật tiếng Anh. Tuy nhiên, trong cuốn sách ‘Giáo Khoa về Dịch Thuật’
ở Chương 13: Dịch từ mới (The translation of neologisms), Mục tính kết hợp (Collocations) tr.145 có vẻ như ông phạm một lỗi về tính kết hợp từ khi cho ví dụ từ ‘sunshine industries’.

SUNRISE + INDUSTRY: An industry involved in new TECHNOLOGY

Vì từ ‘industry/industries’ thường kết hợp với danh từ ‘sunrise’ thành một danh từ ghép ‘sunrise industry’ (ngành công nghiệp đang lên/ngành công nghiệp bình minh) và danh từ ‘sunset’ thành ‘sunset industry’ (ngành công nghiệp đang tàn/các ngành công nghiệp hoàng hôn) như ở các ví dụ:

– New sunrise industries like computers and telecommunications
– Attempts to attract sunrise industries to the area
– Sunrise industries including biotechnology, computer technology and robotics.
– Sunrise industries are often found in areas where there was little industry in the past.

SUNSET + INDUSTRY: An industry involved in an old TECHNOLOGY, often in old industrial area, and often one which is getting smaller

Và danh từ ‘sunset’ thành ‘sunset industry’ (ngành công nghiệp đang tàn/các ngành công nghiệp hoàng hôn) như ở các ví dụ:

– Shipbuilding is a classical sunset industry.
– The EU has often been engaged in protecting sunset industries such as the steel industry.

Từ ‘sunset’ cũng kết hợp với ‘provision’/‘clause’ (chủ đề pháp lý) có thể dịch theo nghĩa đen ‘điều khoản hoàng hôn’ hay theo lối tường giải ‘điều khoản quy định thời gian hết hiệu lực’ (part of a law, rule or agreement that states it will no longer apply from a particular date).

SUNSHINE LAWS: A law that forces government organization to make certain types of information available to the pubic

Trái lại, ‘sunshine’ kết hợp với ‘laws’, ‘policy’ cho ra các danh từ ghép như ‘sunshine laws’ (các sắc luật thanh thiên/luật công khai thông tin), ‘sunshine policy’ (chính sách ánh dương) như ở ví dụ sau:

– The sunshine laws were introduced to curb corruption.
– The Alabama Legislature passed a new sunshine law last week.
– Open meetings were introduced as part of the sunshine policy at the Accountancy Institute.
